Microsoft Windows 7 premature Updates (hence Support?) Shutdown

The following thread was branded as spam (deleted): https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/9bffb4fe-7746-4d73-95fd-03e4cf3fa87f/microsoft-windows-7-premature-updates-hence-support-shutdown?forum=w7itproperf
It described the current premature shutdown issue:

On my Windows 7 PC I attempted Check Updates via any of the Download/Install manual/auto options, but neither important or optional updates are being offered with the system querying (blue bar showing activity) then ending/without change. The Windows Update software is working/querying fine since I checked it without internet access (fine error output), hence I am asking what to do since it's evident (based on the numerous other Windows 7 Check Updates issue posts, e.g. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/home?category=w7itpro) that Microsoft has in advance of reported deadline (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4057281/windows-7-support-will-end-on-january-14-2020) shutdown Updates, thus support, for my Windows 7...

p.s.:Even if I would've liked to try troubleshooting alternative ways (other means, e.g. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027322/windows-update-troubleshooter), I couldn't, although I wouldn't hesitate to perform additional problem solving tools' options, because I'd have to anticipate the software's file download source placed at an indiscreet link location (https://aka.ms/diag_wu) restricting truly meaningful solution.

I own a toshiba laptop bought Feb 2012, I'm trying to allocate more memory to the page file/virtual memory. So I uncheck the automatic system manage part, it allows to click custom. I enter a initial size to the recomended size, and then a max size click on set and the problem begins. A system properties message saying "Enter a numeric value for the initial page file size". I have and I'm not really to sure of the issue with this. i was hoping to get some ideas thank you.

Major Disk Speed Improvement - Disable Write Cache Buffer Flushing

$

One of the most significant disk speed improvements available to Windows 7 is (for hardware setups that can support it) to disable Write Cache Buffer Flushing.  This allows application software to blaze ahead after writing data to disk without waiting for the physical write to complete.

Not only that, but (depending on the mix of operations you do) it allows the OS to batch requests together and optimize the output so the disk isn't made to seek nearly as much.  You can hear a significant reduction in disk thrashing by changing this one setting.

In My Computer, right-click the C: drive, chooseProperties, then click the Hardware tab.  Then click on the physical drive you're interested in and click the[Properties] button.  In in the dialog that opens, click thePolicies tab:

I have a lot of RAM; stable, reliable hardware; and a good quality UPS.  I've been running with this setting enabled for a couple of years and my system has always been rock solid stable, as well as light and fast.

My questions are simple:

Have you tried this setting?  What is your experience with it?

Random reboots every few days for Months. Please help.

Random reboots  for a few months now but only 1 to 2 times per week, keep thinking I've resolved the issue but then 3-5 days later it hits again. I use remote desktop for this machine so I haven't actually caught the blue screen itself.  Worried about migrating to windows 10 while this issue is happening as this is a mission critical machine with software that already is going to be painful to migrate without any trouble. Would greatly appreciate some help... her's what I have.

I'm having some issues with hibernation and logging off.

I've got some errors in the event log I'm going through but I can't seem to fix this one...

DistributedCOM, EventID 10010
"The server {AB8902B4-09CA-4BB6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

{AB8902B4-09CA-4BB6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5} appears to belong to "Thumbnail Cache Out of Proc Server" DCOM entry. I was hoping I could fix using dcomcnfg.exe but everything is greyed out, even when using the full administrator account.

I'm probably barking up the wrong tree but I tried to followhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/899965/en-us and got stuck due to the lack of permissions to edit so tried to follow http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/4f63ee11-e472-40f9-85db-a6b235d7579c but got stuck as I can't find comuid.dl_ on the Windows 7 install disk.

Any other help would be gratefully received.

This PC is connected to a Windows Home Server if that may make any difference.

When certain programs are run, or when i get to a certain point in a game, or sometimes at random times in certain games, my PC will just freeze. All sound stops, the lights on my keyboard stop animating, and nothing is responsive. The only way out of this is to reboot. After checking the event log all the errors have been the same. After a quick test, an extension of Autodesk Inventor 2017 called mesh enabler crashes the pc when i click on the part inside autodesk. I timed it. From clicking on the part at 23:37 which froze the pc, until 23:38 where i hard rebooted the pc. The event log gave the time stamp of 23:39, and that was when i was brought to my desktop.

High ISR & DPC

$
0

This was posted on the Windows Performance Tools forum but maybe that was the wrong place to post it.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to resolve the following problem of slow PC performance.

I have a problem with the CPU running at 20 – 25% even when the PC is “idle”. The PC runs fine for a minute or two after I log in and then the number of ISR & DPC suddenly goes through the roof and the CPU usage jumps to 20 – 25% and stays there.

The problem is worse whenever there is any disk activity like virus scan, searching, creating shadow copies, etc.

I've made no changes to the PC recently other than installing Windows updates & defragging/cleaning the HDD but my daughters are always installing new software for their photography. There have been no hardware changes prior to the problem occurring.

Xperf trace, DPCLAT, LatencyMon, Process Explorer, Resource Monitor and Performance Information system health reports all point to USBPort.sys as the main culprit with13 million ISR’s a minute recorded by LatencyMon. This is followed by ATAport.sys & HAL.dll in the ISR count but the ISR counts for these are nowhere near as high as USBPort.sys. For DPC’s ATAport is  highest followed by USBPort.sys and dxgkrnl.sys.

With USBPort.sys, 90% of the ISR count is against USBPort_Xdpc_worker but I don’t know what this is.

With ATAPort.sys, most of the DPC count is against IDEPortCompletionDpc. Again I don’t know what this is.

LatencyMon won’t run in Safe mode so I can’t tell if the high ISR/DPC counts are occurring then but in Safe mode the CPU usage at idle is 0% so I assume the high ISR/DPC isn’t happening.

There are only a few hard pagefaults reported by LatencyMon but usually the maximum latencyfor these is off the scale. DPCLAT doesn’t show any spikes outside of the green.

The latest Windows 7 updates are installed and I’ve virus/malware checked the disk using AVG, Malwarebytes & Avast (not all installed at once), cleaned & defragged the disk (I keep it pretty clean & tidy anyway), installed the latest BIOS, LAN, audio & chipset drivers from the Gigabyte web site, updated the Radeon drivers to the latest versions, run SFC /scannow (no problems reported), removed the WD Smartware software, made sure that the HDD is running in AHCI mode (it was IDE), have the Windows power plan set to High Performance with USB Selective Suspend disabled, unplugged all external USB devices apart from the mouse, disabled all the startup programs, used autoruns to clean up some programs running in the background, disabled various devices, services & scheduled tasks like USB hubs, Ritmo multi-card reader, indexing, search, shadow service, Windows Media Network Sharing Service … and tried uninstalling the USB hubs and rebooting to let Windows reinstall the drivers. I didn’t install the latest disk drivers as I wasn’t entirely sure which ones to use (I guess the SATA 2 since I don’t use the SATA 3 ports ??). Device Manager tells me I have the latest drivers installed for every device but then it was telling me that before I updated the drivers.

Nothing made a difference until I disabled the USB 3.0 ports in Device Manager. Instantly the CPU usage dropped to 5 – 10 % however the high ISR counts continue as outlined above. Reinstalling the NEC USB 3.0 drivers from the Gigabyte site made no difference (that is still 20 – 25% CPU usage when enabled and 5 – 10% CPU usage when disabled, high ISR/DPC counts all the time). Uninstalling the USB 3.0 ports and rebooting resulted in them not being recognised by Windows i.e. they appear in Device Manager as Unknown Device i.e. Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems.

Resource Monitor and Process Explorer both show Interrupts and DPC accounting for (almost) all the5 - 10% CPU usage.

I've checked all the Event Logs but I can't really interpret what they are telling me apart from there are the occasional Critical & Warning message  ........ and lots of informational stuff.

My PC specs are:

. Gigabyte GA-P55a-UD3L Rev 1.0 mobo, Intel i5 760 quad core CPU, 4Gb RAM (26% used when idle).

. Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5 Tb HDD

. Sony DL DVD

. Ritmo internal multi-card reader (appears as multiple USB HDD in Device Manager)

. Radeon HD 5700 graphics card

. external WD MyBook 1.5Tb HDD (used for backups only)

. Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Keyboard response rate in the registry - What does the "flag" setting do?

Currently I am trying to increase my response rate of the keyboard, I have set it up to be:

AutoRepeatDelay - 250

AutoRepeatRate - 6

Flags - 27

However, occasionally when using the CTRL and SHIFT keys it appears as if sticky keys turn on and cause my CTRL-SHIFT to be constantly on until pressed again.

This does not happen if I set the flag to its default value - so the question is what does this value change?

/RebuildBCD error

Where to start.. I've been trying to figure this problem out for the past week, but to no avail. I feel that I've exhausted all options. The issue I'm having didn't stem from a hardware or software change; it came about after a very routine restart. Here's what happened-

1) Computer started up and brought up the BIOS screen- Nothing strange there.
2) It's been two minutes and the BIOS screen is still up.. this has never happened before.
3) The BIOS screen goes away, only to be replaced by a black screen with a single, blinking cursor in the top left-hand corner.
4) The hard drive light is solid, but it doesn't sound like the hard drive is doing any heavy searching.
5) Two hours later and I'm still stuck at a black screen. The hard drive light is off, but that's all that's changed.

I've tried removing the battery and putting it back in, but that didn't fix anything. I tried taking out the RAM modules to test if the motherboard was fried- I got an error code, so I figure the motherboard is fine. I tried using the Win7 Recovery Console, but the Startup Repair returns this error-

Root cause found:
-----------------------
No OS files found on disk.

Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x3bc3
Time take = 2246 ms

Well, I know for a fact there's an OS on the disk, I can see it. Regardless, the Recovery Console doesn't agree. I've tried all methods of manual repair as well. At least, every solution I could find on these forums and every other forum on the internet. Nothing has worked. By the way, I don't know if this is important or not, but there's another strange occurrence that I can't explain- everything takes forever to start. The BIOS screen stays up too long, the Windows 7 CD takes about 10 minutes to start up, and everything else is slow.

I'm out of ideas here folks. I will provide any information you need, just ask. I'd prefer to fix this without having to reformat my HD, but that's what it's coming down to. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am having a hard drive issue and im hoping its just a couple bad blocks that can be fixed via low level format heres the error message though. If you think I am screwed let me know cause its a game clients fault that this started happening never had the issue before until I installed said game client.
